State Railroads. The State currently runs three
commuter and six freight lines. The commuter
lines include two Baltimore-Washington lines and
one Brunswick-Washington line. Freight lines
include four on Maryland's Eastern Shore, one in
Frederick County, and one in Carroll County. The
five Class I railroads presently operating in
Maryland cover almost 1,000 route miles.

Education. Public Schools (1983-84) in Maryland
include 749 elementary, 189 middle/combined,
and 294 high schools, with an enrollment of
683,491 students; average cost per pupil (1983-84),
$3,077. Public high school graduates, 52,446;
percent intending to continue their education, 45.4.
Nonpublic schools in Maryland (1983-84) include
323 kindergarten or pre-kindergarten, 305
elementary, 148 middle/combined, and 73 high
schools, with an enrollment of 137,036. A tripartite
system of public higher education in Maryland
includes 17 community colleges, 8 four-year
colleges and universities, and the University of
Maryland. Among independent postsecondary
institutions are 3 two-year colleges, 20 four-year
colleges and universities, and approximately 206
proprietary schools. Federal funds support the
U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Libraries, 1983. Twenty-four public library
systems include 178 public libraries and 33
bookmobiles, with total collections of 10,664,267
items. School library media centers are located in
1,189 elementary, middle, and secondary schools,
with total collections of nearly 14 million items.

The Maryland State Library Network provides
resources to local libraries throughout the State.
The Network is composed of the State Library
Resource Center (Enoch Pratt Free Library,
Central Building), three Regional Library
Resource Centers (Eastern Shore, Southern
Maryland, Western Maryland), four Metropolitan
Referral Centers (Anne Arundel, Baltimore,
Montgomery, and Prince George's counties), and
academic libraries, including Catonsville and Essex
Community Colleges, The Johns Hopkins
University Libraries, Towson State University, and
Libraries of the University of Maryland.

Medical Care, 1984. Personnel licensed to practice
in the State: 11,588 physicians; 35,906 registered
nurses; 9,403 practical nurses; 3,154 dentists; 1,409
dental hygienists. Licensed facilities: 84 hospitals,
201 nursing homes (comprehensive care), 20
alcoholic intermediate care facilities, 51
domiciliary care homes, 8 residential treatment
centers for emotionally disturbed youth, and 11
mental retardation centers.
