economic, and geographic information for plan-
ning purposes. Included within the Office are the
Research and State Data Center, the Automated
Geographic Information and Remote Sensing Pro-
gram, and the Planning Library and State Deposi-
tory of Plans.
Research staff prepares projections of popula-
tion, housing demands, and employment by place
of work for each jurisdiction in the State for a
twenty-year planning horizon. These projections
are updated on a three-year cycle. Annually, ten-
year projections of public school enrollment by
grade for each jurisdiction are prepared. These
projections are used by other State and local
agencies as well as the private sector in their
planning and in preparing projections specific to
their client or customer population.
The State Data Center maintains statistical data
from the U.S. Bureau of the Census and other
information sources. The data covered include
such areas as: population, housing, employment,
income, agriculture, construction, manufacturing,
retail and wholesale trade, government, and educa-
tion.
Planning Data operates the Maryland Automat-
ed Geographic Information (MAGI) System, a
computerized system that has geographically grid-
referenced data on the physical, cultural, and aerial
attributes of the State.
Planning Data also maintains a Georgaphic
Districting Information System (GeoDIS), a com-
puter-based interactive system for the analysis and
map display of socio-economic and client specific
data for the State.
The Department of State Planning Library serves
as the central depository for all government gener-
al, area, and functional plans. The Library has the

Authorized by Chapter 746, Acts of 1980, the
Patuxent River Commission annually reviews the
operation of State and local agencies in regard to
the Patuxent River. It provides a clearinghouse for
watershed information and reviews plans and com-
ments on reports and development projects im-
pacting the river. The Commission assisted in the
preparation of the Patuxent River Policy Plan, and
will contribute to its updating and implementation.
The Commission is composed of ten members,
one from each of the seven counties within the
watershed and three ex officio members. The
Commission reports annually to the General As-
sembly.
