taken place, with the most recent additions being
made in 1956 when the old administration building
and one of the original cell houses were razed to
provide a site for a sixty-bed general hospital to
serve male inmates in the correctional system. A
new maximum security section for the confinement
of prisoners awaiting execution and a new execu-
tion chamber (lethal gas) were also erected in 1956.
The last execution in the Maryland Penitentiary
took place in June 1961.

The Maryland Correctional Training Center was
authorized by Chapter 385, Acts of 1966. The
Center places emphasis upon educational and
vocational training. Inmates who are not amenable
to treatment programs either remain in or are
transferred to the Maryland Correctional Institu-
tion—Hagerstown.

A Work Release Center occupies a separate
facility on the institutional grounds. It has a rated
capacity of seventy-five beds and houses those
inmates on the Work Release Program and several
inmates who are part of the institutional cadre.
Another minimum security unit, opened in 1977,
has a rated capacity of 128 beds.

The Roxbury Correctional Institution is a
721-bed medium security prison, which opened in
December 1983.

The Maryland Correctional Institution—Ha-
gerstown, originally established as the Maryland
Institution for Males, is a medium security institu-
tion established by Chapter 519, Acts of 1945. It
replaced the Maryland State Penal Farm estab-
lished by Chapter 366, Acts of 1931. Between 1962
and 1964, it was known as the Maryland Institu-
tion for Men. It adopted its present name on June
1, 1964.

Two housing areas have been added to the
Institution. In 1980, the Roxbury Emergency
Housing Unit (EHU) opened with a 128 bed
capacity. The Western Program Development
Center, a second emergency housing unit of 420
beds, opened in 1983.

The Maryland House of Correction is the second
oldest prison in the State. Established by Chapter
233, Acts of 1874, and opened in 1879, it is a
medium security institution for male offenders
serving sentences of three months or longer.

MARYLAND CORRECTIONAL
INSTITUTION FOR WOMEN—JESSUP

The Maryland Correctional Institution for
Women—Jessup was originally established by
Chapter 71, Acts of 1941, as the Women's Prison
of the State of Maryland. By Chapter 520, Acts of
1945, it was renamed Maryland State Reformatory
for Women. In 1962, it became the Maryland
Institution for Women. Its present name was
adopted in 1964.

Prior to the erection of this institution, female
prisoners were lodged in a section of the Maryland
