responsibility for setting pilotage fees and charges
was transferred from the Board to the Public
Service Commission.

The Board consists of nine members appointed
for two-year terms by the Governor. The Secretary
of Licensing and Regulation, or his designee,
serves on the Board and the eight remaining
members are appointed with his advice. Four
members must be licensed or retired pilots with at
least five years experience. Two must be members
of the steamship industry who actively employ
pilots, and two are consumers from the public.

Authorization for the Board continues until July
1, 1986 (Code 1957, An. 74, secs. 1-20).

The first board for the examining and licensing
of plumbers in Maryland was established by Chap-
ter 439, Acts of 1886, with jurisdiction limited to
Baltimore City. The State Board of Commissioners
of Practical Plumbing was created by Chapter 436,
Acts of 1910. The Board examines and certifies
journeymen and master plumbers. It serves as the
regulatory agency for the plumbing trade and
business.

The Board is composed of nine members ap-
pointed by the Governor with the advice of the
Secretary of Licensing and Regulation and the
advice and consent of the Senate. The members
include seven practical and skilled plumbers, from
various regions of the State, and two public
members. From May 1, 1985, three members will
serve one-year terms, three will serve two-years,
and three will serve three years. Thereafter, all
members will be appointed to three-year terms.

Authorization for the Board continues until July
1, 1993 (Code 1957, Art. 56, secs. 444-^62A).

The State Board of Registration for Professional
Engineers was established by Chapter 752, Acts of
1939. Professional engineers, corporations, and
partnerships wishing to practice in Maryland must
apply to the Board for a certificate. With their
application, they must furnish evidence of their
qualifications both in experience and training.

The Board has powers to enforce the provisions
of the registration law or to restrain any violation
of it. It can investigate charges as well as hear
complaints of violations, subpoena witnesses, re-
quire the submission of documents or other perti-
nent data, and apply for relief by injunction.

The Board consists of six members appointed to
five-year terms by the Governor with the advice of
the Secretary of Licensing and Regulation. Two
members represent the public. Four members are
professional engineers who may be selected from
lists of nominees recommended by the Maryland
Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engi-
neers, the American Society of Mechanical Engi-
neers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic
Engineers, or the American Institute of Chemical
Engineers.

Authorization for the Board continues until July
1, 1993 (Code 1957, Art. 75 1/2, secs. 1-21).

The State Board of Registration for Professional
Land Surveyors was established by Chapter 763,
Acts of 1977. All persons seeking to practice
surveying in Maryland must submit their qualifica-
tions to the Board or pass the examination before
being issued a certificate of registration to practice.
