tion services, or general medical care for chronic
disease or terminal illness. The Center also oper-
ates a kidney dialysis facility for area residents.
Deer's Head Center provides the services of a
chronic disease hospital (including a small hospice
service) and a comprehensive care facility, as well
as out-patient and end-stage kidney dialysis, and
out-patient rehabilitation therapy. The licensed
capacity for the Center is 235 patient beds (Code
Health-General Article, sec. 19-502).

Montebello Center, authorized by Chapter 412,
Acts of 1951, opened in 1953. It is the principal
unit of the chronic hospital system. The Center
provides hospitalization for chronically ill and
aging adults who need physical medicine and
rehabilitation services. It also provides out-patient
rehabilitation medicine services (Code Health-
General Article, sec. 19-502).

Western Maryland Center originally was estab-
lished as Western Maryland State Hospital (Chap-
ter 53, Acts of 1952). It opened in 1957.
The Center provides chronic hospital and com-
prehensive care facility in-patient care, out-patient
end-stage kidney dialysis, adult day treatment
services, and out-patient rehabilitation services.
Currently, it has 139 licensed hospital beds and 36
licensed skilled nursing home beds for rehabilita-
tion services and the care of the chronically ill. An
outpatient unit provides hemodialysis for patients
with chronic kidney disease (Code Health-General
Article, sec. 19-502).

Located on the grounds of Spring Grove Hospi-
tal Center, the Tawes-Bland Bryant Nursing Home
opened in 1974. It provides nursing home care to
geriatric patients who have been in-patients of
State hospitals and cannot be placed in private
facilities.
