The Assistant Secretary is responsible for plan-
ning, coordinating, directing, and implementing all
programs and activities of the Office of Agricultur-
al Development and Resource Conservation. Units
within the Office include Marketing Services, Sta-
tistical Reporting Service, Agricultural Fair Board,
State Apple Commission, State Tobacco Authori-
ty, Soil Conservation Committee, Soil Conserva-
tion Administration, Maryland Agricultural Land
Preservation Foundation, State Board of Veteri-
nary Medical Examiners, and State Board of
Inspection of Horse Riding Stables. Most pro-
grams carried out within this Office are service
oriented, designed to provide assistance and sup-
port to the agricultural community in the areas of
marketing, product promotion, soil and water
conservation, land preservation, and agriculturally
related, non-point source pollution.

Marketing Services provides programs and ser-
vices designed to help all segments of the economy
through the market system from producer to
consumer. Programs include: market improvement
projects to improve quality and presentation of
agricultural commodities and to enhance consumer
acceptance; international marketing; market news
and statistical reporting services in conjunction
with the U.S. Department of Agriculture; and an
active consumer marketing information program.

The Statistical Reporting Service collects, sum-
marizes, and publishes data series relating to the
production and marketing of agricultural products,
agriculture prices and income, and other statistics
pertinent to agriculture and agribusiness. These
data include series on the acreage, yield, and
production of major field crops, vegetables, fruits,
livestock and poultry, monthly and seasonal or
annual average prices, farm expenditures, and
labor. State statistics generally are available, and
for some commodities county-level data also are
compiled.
