The District Court of Maryland was created by
a constitutional amendment ratified in 1970. The
District Court began operating in July 1971. It
replaced an existing miscellaneous system of trial
magistrates, people's, and municipal courts. It is
a court of record, is entirely State funded, and
has statewide jurisdiction.
