tery, Hagerstown, where the Confederate dead of
the battles of Antietam and South Mountain are
buried. At the cemetery, there are 2,468 bodies
interred. Of this number, 346 have been identi-
fied.

The Board of Trustees was chartered by Chap-
ter 213, Acts of 1870. Originally the Board was
composed of five members: three from Maryland,
one a representative from the State of Virginia,
and one a representative from West Virginia. Vir-
ginia and West Virginia initially contributed to
the cost for funding and maintaining the Ceme-
tery and so were given a place on the Board. Yet,
in the last several years neither Virginia nor West
Virginia has appointed a representative. As of
now, there are only three active members, all
from Maryland. They are appointed by the Gov-
ernor to serve three-year terms.

The Maryland Veterans Home Commission
was created in 1975 to provide a home for veter-
ans in the State of Maryland (Chapter 575, Acts
of 1975). The Maryland veterans home will be lo-
cated at Charlotte Hall in St. Mary's County and
will be known as the Charlotte Hall Veterans
Home. The Commission will maintain the home,
make rules for its government and management,
and appoint its commandant.

The Commission consists of twelve members,
of whom one must be the Maryland Veterans
Commission chairperson. The Governor appoints
eleven members with the advice and consent of
the Senate for four-year terms. The Governor, the
president of the Senate, and the speaker of the
House of Delegates serve as ex officio members.

The Commission reports annually to the Gov-

ernor and the General Assembly (Code 1957,
Art. 96 I/2, secs. 51-62).

Washington College is a coeducational liberal
arts and sciences college established in 1782
(Chapter 8, Acts of April Session 1782). The Col-
lege is governed by the Board of Visitors and
Governors. The Board consists of thirty-seven
members. The Governor appoints twelve mem-
bers, one from each of the counties on the East-
ern Shore and three at large. Alumni of the Col-
lege elect twelve additional members and the
Board of Visitors and Governors itself selects an-
other twelve. The final member is the College
President, who is elected by the Board. All terms
are for six years (Chapter 121, Acts of 1922).
