tometrists. The sixth member is a consumer,
appointed by the Governor on the recommenda-
tion of the Secretary with the advice and consent
of the Senate, who cannot have training as an op-
tometrist or a financial interest in a related field.
The Board administers the optometry laws of
the State and regulates the practice of optometry.
It examines, licenses, and registers. Credentials of
applicants must comply with standards set by the
Board. For just cause the Board may revoke any
certificate of registration or examination (Code
Health Occupations Article, Title 10).
Subject to the evaluation and reestablishment
provisions of the Regulatory Programs Evalua-
tion Act (sunset law) of 1978, authorization for
the Board continues until July 1, 1989 (Chapter
626, Acts of 1982).

The Board of Pharmacy, created by Chapter
179, Acts of 1902, consists of eight members. Six
members are skilled pharmacists and two are
consumer representatives. All are appointed by
the Governor upon recommendation of the Secre-
tary of Health and Mental Hygiene for five-year
terms. Each pharmacist member of the Board is
selected from a list of recommendations submit-
ted by the Maryland Pharmaceutical Association.
The consumer members are appointed with the
advice and consent of the Senate and cannot have
had training as a pharmacist or have a financial
interest in a related field. Two members must be
residents of Baltimore City, two must be residents
of the counties of the State, and three must be
from the State at large.
The Board licenses pharmacists by examination
and reciprocity. There is also a biennial re-regis-
tration program for pharmacists. The Board is-
sues permits for the operation of retail pharma-
cies and for the manufacture of drugs, medicines,
toilet articles, dentifrices, and cosmetics. The
Board also licenses jobbers, distributors, and
wholesalers or manufacturers of dangerous (pre-
scription) drugs. In cooperation with the Depart-

ment of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Board
enforces the pharmacy and drug laws of the
State.
Board members and duly authorized agents of
the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
inspect all pharmacies or other places where pre-
scriptions, medicines, drugs, drug products, or
domestic remedies are compounded or sold. They
also inspect prescriptions, medicines, drugs, drug
products, or domestic products exposed for sale.
Druggists and pharmacists are required to keep
in their places of business a suitable book or file
in which to preserve for a period of not less than
five years every prescription compounded or dis-
pensed (Code Health Occupations Article, Title
12).

Created by Chapter 606, Acts of 1947, the
State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners con-
sists of six members who serve five-year terms.
Five members are physical therapists licensed to
practice physical therapy in the State, and one is
a consumer member. The Governor appoints the
physical therapist members from lists submitted
to him and the Secretary of Health and Mental
Hygiene by the American Physical Therapy Asso-
ciation of Maryland. Appointment of the
consumer member must be with the advice and
consent of the Senate. The consumer member
cannot have training as a physical therapist or
have a financial interest in a related field. The
Board examines, licenses, and registers physical
therapists and physical therapy assistants who
wish to practice in Maryland (Code Health Occu-
pations Article, Title 13).

tion Act (sunset law) of 1978, authorization for
the Board continues until July 1, 1988 (Chapter
170, Acts of 1981).
