The Criminal Investigations Division acts upon
authorization from the Governor under Article V,
sec. 3, of the Maryland Constitution to investi-
gate and prosecute a broad range of criminal ac-
tivity.
The Criminal Investigations Unit concentrates
on crimes by State employees, fraud against the
State, multi-county frauds, and criminal viola-
tions of the State tax laws. In addition, the Unit
assists State's Attorneys' Offices where they lack
either resources or expertise in a field of complex
criminal investigation.
The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit investigates
physicians, dentists, nursing homes, hospitals,
pharmacies, and other health care providers re-
ceiving Medicaid funds. Seventy-five percent of
the operating funds of the Unit come from federal
sources.
