meeting held in Salisbury on December 3,
1963. The meeting was attended by the
Governors and representatives of Maryland,
Delaware, and Virginia. As a result of this
meeting, the Council was established in 1964
to advance the economic and cultural welfare
of the people of the Delmarva Peninsula
through advice, counsel, and assistance to such
government agencies and private organizations
as are concerned with programs and activities
to develop the resources and economic activi-
ties of the area. At a second Governors' Con-
ference held on May 11, 1967, the Delmarva
Peninsula was designated by the U. S. Depart-
ment of Commerce and the Economic Devel-
opment Administration as the Delmarva Eco-
nomic Development District under the terms
of the Public Works and Economic Develop-
ment Act of 1965. The Delmarva Advisory
Council is the organization designated by the
three governors to advise and work with the
local organizations in carrying out projects of
the overall economic development program.
The Council consists of forty-seven members
from the three States and several advisory
members. Council members serve for varied
terms.

The Governor created the Maryland Council
on the Economy, Environment, and Energy Pro-
duction by Executive Order in 1978 to succeed
the Maryland Council on the Environment. The
Council is to assist in the formulation of a coordi-
nated policy for the development of natural
resources, the protection of the environment, and
the stimulus of the State's economy. It shall assist
in the resolution of potential conflicts between |
the interests of private industry and the pro-
tection of the State's environment. The Coun-
cil will develop new programs and policies
whenever appropriate. Permanent members of
the Council are the Governor, the Lieutenant
Governor, the Secretary of Budget and Fiscal
Planning, the Secretary of Economic and
Community Development, the Secretary. of
Health and Mental Hygiene, the Secretary of
Natural Resources, the Secretary of State
Planning, and the Secretary of Transportation.
