The Maryland Police Training Commission
was created by Chapter 286, Acts of 1966, to
fulfill the need for improvement in the admin-
istration of law enforcement by raising the
standards of training and education
The Commission consists of fourteen
members of whom eleven are non-appointive
office holders These include the Deputy Secre-
tary of Public Safety, the President of the
Maryland Chiefs of Police Association, the
President of the Maryland Law Enforcement
Officers, Inc, the Attorney General of the
State of Maryland, the Supenntendent of the
Maryland State Police, the Commissioner of the
Baltimore City Police Department, the Presi-
dent of the University of Maryland, the Presi-
dent of the Eastern Shore Police Association, a
representative of the Fraternal Order of Police,
the President of the Maryland State Sheriffs'
Association, and the Agent in Charge of the
Baltimore office of the Federal Bureau of ln-
• vestigation The Secretary of Public Safety and
Correctional Services, with the approval of the
Governor and with the advice and consent of
the Senate, appoints the remaining three
members for three-year terms Each appointive
member must be from a different geographical
. area of the State The eleven non-appointive
members may be represented by alternates, ex-
cept for the Deputy Secretary for Public Safety
" who serves as the Chairperson
Subject to the authority of the Secretary of
• Public Safety and Correctional Services, the
! Commission is vested with the following au-
, thonty, responsibilities, and duties to prescribe
standards for the approval and continuation of
approval of entrance-level and in-service schools
, at which police training and secunty training
' courses required by this section shall be con-
ducted, including but not limited to present
, existing State, regional, county, and municipal
police training schools, to approve and issue
