The Department of Natural Resources was created in 1969 by Chapter 154, Acts of 1969, which
consolidated all conservation and natural resources into one department.
The Department of Natural Resources consists of the following agencies: Capital Programs Administra-
tion, Fisheries Administration, Wildlife Administration, Natural Resources Police Force, Forest Service
and Park Service, Water Resources Administration, Maryland Environmental Service, Energy and Coastal
Zone Administration, Maryland Geological Survey, Maryland State Board of Well Drillers, Scenic and
Wild Rivers Review Board, and Maryland Environmental Trust. The Department also includes the Upper
Potomac River Commission, Land Reclamation Committee, Program Open Space Committee, Hazardous
Substances Advisory Council, and other advisory bodies. The Department is responsible for the Maryland
membership units of the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin, Susquehanna River Basin
Commission, Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, Potomac River Fisheries Commission, Inter-
state Oil Compact Commission, Interstate Mining Commission, Potomac River Basin Advisory Commit-
tee, Ohio River Basin Commission, and the Coastal States Organization, and for such other departments,
agencies, advisory commissions, boards, committees, councils, or units as may hereafter by law be declared
to be part of the Department of Natural Resources (Code Natural Resources Article, sees. 1-101 through
1-104).

By Chapter 154, Acts of 1969, the Secretary of
Natural Resources was authorized to create an ad-
visory board for the Department of Natural
Resources. The Secretary determines the size of the
Board. Members serve indefinite terms and repre-
sent the different professional areas or fields of en-
deavor with which the Department of Natural
Resources is concerned (Code Natural Resources
Article, sec. 1-105).
