The State Board of Examiners for Speech
Pathologists, created by Chapter 547, Acts of
1972, consists of five members appointed by
the Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene
for five-year terms, one term expiring each
year. The members of the Board must be
residents of Maryland, three of whom must
have paid work experience in speech pathology
for at least five years, hold the certificate of
clinical competenence in speech pathology of
the American Speech and Hearing Association
or the equivalent, and be approved by the
Maryland Speech and Hearing Association. One
member must have paid work experience in au-
diology for at least five years, hold the certifi-
cate of clinical competence in audiology of the
American Speech and Hearing Association or
the equivalent, and be approved by the Mary-
land Speech and Hearing Association. One
member must be a person licensed to practice
medicine in Maryland and hold a certificate of
qualification from the American Board of Oto-
laryngology.

The Board evaluates the qualifications of
Speech Pathologists in Maryland and issues
licenses to those who fulfill the requirements. The
licenses are renewed annually (Code 1957, Art.
43, sees. 790-808).

This Board was created by Chapter 430, Acts
of 1967. It consists of nine members appointed by
the Governor from among representatives of mu-
nicipal government, sanitary or metropolitan
commissions, a water works superintendent, a
wastewater works superintendent, a farmer, an
engineer, and representatives of the Department
of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Water
Resources Administration. Members serve for
four-year staggered terms, except that the
representatives of the Department of Health and
Mental Hygiene and the Water Resources Ad-
ministration serve at the pleasure of their
appointing authorities.

The Board established its present certification
program in 1970 for superintendents of water works,
wastewater works, and industrial wastewater works
to protect public health and to prevent pollution.
The Board also coordinates examinations for Super-
intendent certification (Code 1957, Art. 43, sec.
406A). Presently in the State there are 2,500
individuals certified by the Board.
