The Teachers' Retirement System was
established by Chapter 344, Acts of 1927.
It is administered by a Board of Trustees
of five members, three of whom are ex
officio members; the remaining two are
elected by the membership of the retirement
system. The system administers the retire-
ment allowances and benefits for the teach-
ers of the State and is responsible for the
proper investment and administration of
funds entrusted to its care. In addition to
the teachers in the Maryland public schools,
the faculty members of the State colleges,
the University of Maryland and Morgan
State University are members of the System
(Code 1957, 1975 Repl Vol., 1975 Supp.,
Art. 77, sees. 176, 190-212).

The Employees' Retirement System was
established by Chapter 377, Acts of 1941
It is administered by a Board of Trustees
of seven members, four of whom are ex
officio members, one appointed by the Board |
of Public Works, and the remaining two are
elected by the membership of the Retire-
ment System. The System administers the
retirement allowances and benefits for the
employees of the State and the municipali-
ties that participate in the system, and is re-
sponsible for the proper investment and ad-
ministration of funds entrusted to its care.
In addition, the system administers retire-
ment or pension plans for members of the
General Assembly and Judges (Code 1957.
1970 Repl. Vol., 1975 Supp., Art. 73B.
sees. 1-34. 46 and 1973 Repl Vol., Art. 26,
sees 49-50C, 125-125A, and 144, 149 and
Art. 77A. sec. 14). Since June 1, 1956.
Social Security coverage has been adminis-
tered through the Division of Social Secur-
ity for all State employees and all teachers
(Code 1957, 1970 Repl. Vol.. 1975 Supp.
Art. 73B, sees. 35-45).

The State Police Retirement System, es-
tablished by Chapter 349, Acts of 1949, is
administered by a Board of Trustees con-
sisting of the Superintendent of the Depart-
ment of State Police, the Comptroller of
the Treasury, the State Treasurer, the Sec-
retary of the Department of Budget and
Fiscal Planning, the Secretary of Personnel
and two members appointed by the Board
of Public Works from the enforcement force
of the Department of State Police for terms
