pertaining to agriculture. The Commission
formulates and makes proposals for the
advancement of agriculture, assists in the
promotion of Maryland agricultural indus-
tries and products and advises the Depart-
ment of Natural Resources on proposed
wetland regulations.
The Commission consists of seventeen
members of whom the principal administra-
tive officer for agricultural affairs of the
University of Maryland serves ex officio.
The remaining sixteen members are ap-
pointed by the Governor for three-year
terms as follows: two representing the dairy
segment; two representing the poultry seg-
ment; one the livestock segment; one the
tobacco segment; one the nursery segment;
one the horticulture segment; one the field
crop segment; one the vegetable segment;
one from the veterinary profession; one
nominated by the Maryland State Grange;
one nominated by the Maryland Farm Bu-
reau; and three appointed at large from serv-
ices related to agriculture. No appointed
person may serve more than two consecu-
tive terms. The Board selects its own officers
and is responsible for liaison between seg-
ments of the agricultural industry and the
executive and the legislative branches of the
State and Federal governments (Agriculture
Art., sees. 2-201 to 2-205).

The Inspector of Tobacco, an office es-
tablished by Chapter 314, Acts of 1898,
is appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture
with the approval of the Governor. He must
be a resident of one of the tobacco growing
counties and a tobacco grower or a duly
qualified tobacco dealer. The Inspector of
Tobacco inspects and grades tobacco grown,
sold, or stored within the State of Maryland.
He also supervises the State Tobacco Ware-
house and all property connected therewith

in Cheltenham (Agriculture Art., sees. 7-
301 to 7-326).

The State Board of Veterinary Medical
Examiners, established by Chapter 273,
Acts of 1894, and enlarged by Chapter 635,
Acts of 1974, is composed of seven mem-
bers appointed by the Governor with the
advice and consent of the Senate. Each ap-
pointment is made from a list of at least
three names for each vacancy submitted
to the Governor by the Secretary of Agri-
culture for five-year terms. Five of the mem-
bers shall be veterinarians who are licensed
and registered and engaged in active prac-
tice. Of these five, two must have their
practices predominantly for large animals.
Two members of the Board shall not be
veterinarians.
The Board passes upon the qualifications
of candidates for licenses to practice veter-
inary medicine in the State and examines
such persons. It may conduct hearings and
pass upon complaints of illegal or unethical
practices or sanitation requirements and may
institute proceedings, in the courts against
those engaged in illegal practice (Agricul-
ture Art., sees. 2-301 to 2-313).
