The Eastern Shore State Hospital, established by Chapter 187, Acts
of 1912, admitted its first patients in 1915. This hospital provides for
the care of mentally ill patients, who are residents of the Eastern
Shore except Cecil County.
This facility is licensed for 577 patients.

MARYLAND PSYCHIATRIC RESEARCH CENTER

The Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, established by Chapter
558, Acts of 1967, is located on the grounds of the Spring Grove State
Hospital. Construction was begun in June 1967, and it was completed
in 1968.
The Center provides a program of basic and applied interdisciplinary
research in mental illness and mental retardation. It also coordinates
research activities at the various State mental hospitals, and offers
training in research for graduate and post-graduate students in psy-
chiatry and behavioral sciences (Code 1957, 1972 Repl. Vol., Art. 59,
sees. 19C and 19D).
