cares for boys who are 13 1/2 to 15 years of age.

MARYLAND CHILDREN'S CENTER

By Chapter 98, Acts of 1956, the General Assembly authorized the
construction of the Maryland Children's Center, which is a 112-bed
facility in Baltimore County. The Center, when it opened in 1956, had
a capacity of 56. It was increased to its present capacity in 1967. The
Center may detain a child, under court order, pending further disposi-
tion by the Court. It studies and evaluates each child as to causes of
behavior and makes recommendations to the courts and the Depart-
ment regarding an appropriate treatment. The study includes psy-
chiatric, social, psychological, medical, educational and group living
evaluations. In terms of budget and administration, the Maryland
Children's Center is considered as a single unit with the Waxter
Children's Center.

Opened in November 1963, the Thomas J. S. Waxter Children's Cen-
ter has the same Superintendent and the same powers and responsibil-
ities as the Maryland Children's Center. Initially known as the South-
ern Maryland Children's Center, it was authorized by Chapter 38, Acts
of 1962. It received its present name by Chapter 131, Acts of 1963.
The Waxter Center provides overnight and weekend detention serv-
ices to the Courts as well as detention up to thirty days on Court order,
where a complete diagnostic evaluation is not requested. The Center
has a forty bed capacity and is situated in Anne Arundel County.

MARYLAND TRAINING SCHOOL FOR BOYS

This institution was established by Chapter 374, Acts of 1850, as the
House of Refuge. It has been situated at its present site near Loch
Raven in Baltimore since 1910, when its name was changed to Mary-
land School for Boys. By Chapter 300, Acts of 1918, its name was
changed to Maryland Training School for Boys. The school provides
for the care and training of delinquent boys. During the fiscal year
1972 it provided care for 497 boys committed to the school and 758
who were detained there.
