MARYLAND MANUAL 287
Division of Instructional Television
The Division of Instructional Television, which is the Maryland
State Department of Education's newest Division is responsible for
inschool telecasting over the State network. The first phase of tele-
casting went into operation in September 1969.
Instructional Television works with representative educators of
Maryland's 24 local units and with other divisions of the State De-
partment of Education to survey school programs and to identify
educational needs which can be best met by instructional television
service.
The Division telecasts instructional television series provided
through contract and original Maryland productions as requested by
the schools to supplement their primary, secondary, and adult educa-
tion curricula. The Division also arranges for the production or
purchase of print materials and other support services such as semi-
nars, credit courses, workshops and consultants, necessary for the
effective utilization of the instructional television programming.
The Division of Instructional Television is participating in the
design of a continuing program of research and evaluation for de-
veloping the Maryland telecast schedule for schools. Telecasts begin
in October on WMPB, Channel 67, and WCPB, Channel 28, Mary-
land's first State PTV transmitters. Expansion plans in the network
will bring ITV services to other counties of Maryland and eventually
to the entire State. The next transmitter at Hagerstown is nearly
completed, and the Annapolis transmitter has been approved. When
added, these transmitters will extend State coverage and help fulfill
legislative responsibilities for television service to the State.
