Mills Box 301, Waldorf 20601 Telephone: 645-2693 The Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland was formed on December 6, 1964, to initiate and coordinate plans and projects for the development of human and economic resources in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's counties. The State Department of Economic Develop- ment sponsored the Council and assisted in its formation. By an Executive Order issued by the Governor on May 14, 1965, the Council was recognized as the cooperative planning and development agency in Southern Maryland. The Council was permanently estab- lished by Chapter 586, Acts of 1966. It became a corporate body by Chapter 573, Acts of 1970 as amended by Chapter 450, Acts of 1971, and by Chapter 217, Acts of 1972. The Council is composed of twenty-five members including all the elected members of the General Assembly from each county, the Board of County Commissioners, one representative of the County Economic Development Commission, the County Planning and Zoning Commission and a member-at-large. There are also non-voting mem- bers representing the State Planning Department and the Department of Economic and Community Development. The Council meets at least quarterly (Chapter 298, Acts of 1965; Chapter 662, Acts of 1965; Chapter 586, Acts of 1966; Chapter 573, Acts of 1970; Chapter 450, Acts of 1971; Chapter 217, Acts of 1972). University College, University of Maryland, College Park 20742 The Governor designated the University of Maryland as the State agency to administer Title I of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and appointed the Council in the same year. The Council, advisory in nature, consists of representatives and institutions of higher educa- tion, government and community affairs. |
