supervised approximately 28,000 parolees and probationers and con-
ducted approximately 12,000 investigations of various types.

The Board of Parole was created by Chapter 457, Acts of 1968 to
become effective on January 1, 1969 and to replace the Board of
Parole and Probation.
The Board is composed of a chairman and six associate members,
all of whom are appointed for terms of eight years each by the
Secretary of Public Safety and Correctional Services, with the ap-
proval of the Governor and with the advice and consent of the Senate.
The Secretary of Public Safety and Correctional Services designates
the Chairman of the Board.
The Board has exclusive power to hear cases for parole release
and revocation, and to authorize the parole of persons sentenced under
the laws of this State to any penal or correctional institution. The
Board also has the power to issue warrants for the return to custody
of alleged violators of parole and to suspend or revoke a parole upon
a showing of a violation of the conditions there of. The Board is author-
ized to divide in panels of two or more members to hear cases for
parole release and revocation. The concurrence of the panel majority
and no less than two members is required for any action. The Board
must hear every inmate who has served one-fourth of a determinate
sentence. The Board holds hearings at every penal and correctional
institution for each inmate who has served one-fourth of a total sen-
tence. By law, it must visit every such institution not less than
monthly and also conduct hearings as often as may be required
at jails and/or other place of penal confinement or detention in the
State. In addition, the Board evaluates information on the activities
of parolees as reported by the Division of Parole and Probation and
makes recommendations to the Governor with respect to life cases,
pardons, and commutations of sentences (Code 1957, 1971 Repl. Vol.,
Art. 41, sees. 107-114).
