Should any of the dates listed above fall on a Sunday, the holiday
is observed on the following Monday (Acts of 1882, chap. 23).
Effective January 1, 1971 (Acts 1969, chap. 206), certain holidays
are now observed on Mondays, as follows:
Third Monday in February - - Washington's Birthday
Last Monday in May -- --- .--- Memorial Day
Second Monday in October - -- - Columbus Day
Fourth Monday in October -- -- -- Veterans' Day
There will be no changes in the observance of any of the other
days (Code 1957, 1968 Repl. Vol., 1970 Supp., Art. 13, sees. 9, II, 12).
If any of the holidays enumerated in Section 9 of Article 13 should
occur on Saturday, the Friday immediately preceding shall be deemed
and treated as a holiday (Acts of 1970, chap. 359; Code 1957, 1964
Repl. Vol., 1970 Supp., Art. 100, sec. 77).
2. Movable
The Friday before Easter Sunday (Acts 1882, chap. 23), Good
Friday.
The first Monday in September (Acts 1916, chap. 633), Labor Day.
The fourth Thursday in November (Acts 1890, chap. 238), Thanks-
giving Day.
All days of general and Congressional Elections (Acts 1882, chap. 23).
Days of public thanksgiving proclaimed by Governor (Acts 1862,
chap. 70) or by President of the United States (Acts of 1882, chap. 23).
The Governor may declare bank holidays in case of an emergency
resulting from fire, flood, storms, snow or other causes (Acts of 1966,
chap. 243).
3. Saturdays
It is lawful for any banking institution to remain closed on any one
or more or all Saturdays if this closing is authorized by resolution of
its board of directors. Any Saturday on which such bank may remain
closed shall constitute a legal holiday (Code 1957, 1968 Repl. Vol.,
Art. 13, sec. 10).
It is lawful for banks in Maryland to close their doors at twelve
o'clock noon on every Saturday of the year. After twelve o'clock noon,
Saturday is a legal holiday. This does not apply in Howard and Talbot
counties (Code 1957, 1968 Repl. Vol., Art. 13, sec. 12).
