Banigan, Secretary-Treasurer 8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring 20910 Telephone: 689-1480 6600 Kenilworth Avenue, Riverdale 20840 Telephone: 277-2200 This Commission has general planning and park jurisdiction over the Maryland-Washington Metropolitan District created by Chapter 448, Acts of 1927, and the Maryland-Washington Regional District created by Chapter 714, Acts of 1939. Both districts are within Mont- gomery and Prince George's counties adjoining the District of Columbia and embrace approximately 919 square miles and 1,001 square miles, respectively. The 1970 U. S. census population of the bi-county region is 1,183,376, with 522,809 in Montgomery County and 660,567 in Prince George's County. The 1971-1972 estimated taxable basis of Montgomery County is $3,730,000,000; the Regional District is $3,404,000,000; and the Metro- politan District is $3,400,000,000. The 1973-1972 estimated taxable base of Prince George's County is $3,039,000,000; the Regional District is $2,999,000,000; and the Metropolitan District is $2,914,000,000. The Commission has been given, through bi-county enactments of the Maryland General Assembly, definite jurisdiction over the regional planning of the Maryland-Washington Regional District, which in- cludes all of Montgomery County and Prince George's County, except- ing certain incorporated communities which retain their own planning and zoning authority. The Commission is composed erf ten members, five of whom must be residents of Montgomery County and five of whom must be resi- dents of Prince George's County. Not more than three members from each county may be members of the same political party. Members of the Commission are nominated by the County Executive for their respective counties, and must be confirmed by the respective County Council. Appointments to the Commission are for four-year terms. Vacancies are filled in the same manner as appointments and for the unexpired term. The respective appointing authorities may at their discretion designate a member of the Commission from each county to serve on a full-time basis, and may designate the Chairman of their respective planning boards. The Commission then elects one of these designated members as Chairman of the full Commission and the other as Vice Chairman. The five members from each county constitute the County Planning Board. The Chairman and the Vice Chairman of the Commission also act as Chairmen, respectively, of their County Planning Boards. The Commission appoints its Executive Director, Secretary-Treasurer, General Counsel, Director of Planning, Director of Parks, and a Director of Public Relations and may appoint a Director of Land |
