The Delmarva Advisory Council, originally called the Delmarva
Steering Committee, was recommended at the Delmarva Development
meeting held in Salisbury on December 3, 1963. The meeting was
attended by the Governors and representatives of Maryland, Dela-
ware and Virginia. As a result of this meeting, the Council was estab-
lished in 1&64 to advance the economic and cultural welfare of the
people of the Delmarva Peninsula through advice, counsel and assist-
ance to such government agencies and private organizations as are
concerned with programs and activities to develop the resources and
economic activities of the area. At a second Governors' Conference
held on May II, 1967, the Delmarva Peninsula was designated by the
U. S. Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Admin-
istration, the Delmarva Economic Development District under the
terms of the Public Works and Economic Development Act of 1965.
The Delmarva Advisory Council is the organization designated by the
three governors to advise and work with the local organizations in
carrying out projects of the overall economic development program.
The Council consists of fifteen members with five from each of the
three States and several advisory members. Council members serve
for three-year terms.

Ex officio members: Harry R. Hughes, Secretary of Transporta-
tion; Neil Solomon, Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene;
James B. Coulter, Secretary of Natural Resources; Vladimir A.
Wahbe, Secretary of State Planning.
Members appointed by Governor: J. Joseph Curran, Jr., State
Senate; Jacob M. Yingling, House of Delegates; C. Bowie Rose,
Member-at-Large.
Appointed members:
Anne Arundel County: Joseph W. Alton, Jr. County Executive;
Philip F. Scheibe, Chairman, County Council, and Robert N.
Jackson, Chairman, Planning Advisory Board.
Baltimore City: William D. Schaefer, Mayor; Walter S. Orlin-
sky, President, City Council, and David W. Barton, Jr„ City
