cal subdivisions, and assists the State and Federal agencies and other
groups in the promotion of recreation programs. These functions are
performed by the Recreation Division without charge and its services
are available upon request.
The Grants Section was created in 1965 for the administration of
the Land and Water Conservation Fund program in the State of
Maryland. To date, 190 protects have been processed with a total
allocation of $10.7 million. Projects for the Department of Forests
and Parks are compiled and submitted for funding under the U. S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development. These projects
average $1.5 million each year. The Grants Section is also charged
with the administration of three State of Maryland funding programs.
They are the Patuxent River Watershed Act of 1961, the Outdoor
Recreation Land Loan of 1968 and the Outdoor Recreation Land Loan
of 1969—Program Open Space. To date 225 Program Open Space
projects have been submitted from County and Municipal recreation
and park agencies with a total request for $11.7 million funding.
In addition to these commissions and Boards, the Director and
staff of the Department of Forests and Parks maintain active affilia-
tion with a number of public organizations operating in areas related
to various phases of Departmental functions. Some of these are:
the Board of Examiners of Landscape Architects, Boys' Forestry
Camps, Land Reclamation Committee, Program Open Space Commit-
tee, Chesapeake Bay Inter-Agency Committee, School Community
Center Program, Model Cities Advisory Group, Rural Fire Defense
Committee, Maryland Rural Affairs Council, State Tree Farm Com-
mittee, Prince George's Beautification Committee, State Association
of Forest Conservancy District Boards, County Agricultural Stabili-
zation Conservation Committee, Maryland Committee on Children and
Youth, School Community Center Program—State Board of Educa-
tion (Code 1957, 1970 Repl. Vol., Art. 66C, sees. 343-411U).
