William Pinkney Whyte, Democrat, 1872-1874. Born in Baltimore,
August 9, 1824, the son of Joseph and Isabella (Pinkney) White.
Episcopalian. Married (1) Louisa D. Hollingsworth; (2) Mrs. Raleigh
Thomas. Died in Baltimore, March 17, 1908. Buried in Greenmount
Cemetery, Baltimore.(1)
James Black Groome, Democrat, 1874-1876. Born in Cecil County,
April 4, 1838, the son of Col. John Charles and Elizabeth (Black)
Groome. Presbyterian. Married Alice L. Edmondson. Died in Balti-
more, October 4, 1893. Buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Elkton.
John Lee Carroll, Democrat, 1876-1880. Born in Baltimore, Septem-
ber 30, 1830, the son of Col. Charles and Mary (Diggs) Carroll. Roman
Catholic. Married Mary Carter Thompson. Died in Washington, D. C.
February 27, 1911. Buried in Bonnie Brae Cemetery in Howard County.
William T. Hamilton, Democrat, 1880-1884. Born in Washington
County, September 8, 1820, the son of Henry and Anna Mary (Hess)
Hamilton. Presbyterian. Married Clara Jenness. Died in Hagerstown,
October 26, 1888. Buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
Robert M. McLane, Democrat, 1884-1885. Born in Wilmington, Dela-
ware, June 23, 1816, the son of Louis and Catherine Mary (Milligan)
McLane. Episcopalian. Resident of Baltimore City when elected. Mar-
ried Georgine Urquhart. Resigned, March 27, 1885. Died in Paris,
France, April 16, 1898. Buried in Greenmount Cemetery, Baltimore."
Henry Lloyd, Democrat, 1886-1888. Born in Dorchester County,
February 21, 1852, the son of Daniel and Kitty (Henry) Lloyd. Episco-
palian. Married Mary Elizabeth Staplefort. Died in Cambridge, De-
cember 30, 1920. Buried in Christ Protestant Episcopal Church Ceme-
tery, Cambridge.
Elihu E. Jackson, Democrat, 1888-1892. Born in Somerset County,
November 3, 1837, the son of Hugh and Sarah (McBride) Jackson.
Methodist. Resident of Wicomico County when elected. Married Annie
Francis Rider. Died in Baltimore, December 27, 1907. Buried in Par-
sons Cemetery, Salisbury.
Frank Brown, Democrat, 1892-1896. Born in Carroll County, August
8, 1846, the son of Stephen T. Cockey and Susan A. (Bennett) Brown.
Presbyterian. Married Mrs. Mary Ridgely Preston. Died in Baltimore,
February 3, 1920. Buried in Greenmount Cemetery, Baltimore.
Lloyd Lowndes, Republican, 1896-1900. Born in Clarksburg, West
Virginia, February 21, 1846, the son of Lloyd and Marie (Moore)
Lowndes. Resident of Allegany County when elected. Episcopalian.
Married Elizabeth Tasker Lowndes. Died in Cumberland, January 8,
1905. Buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Cumberland.
John Walter Smith, Democrat, 1900-1904. Born in Worcester County,
February 6, 1845, the son of John Walter and Charlotte (Whitting-
ton) Smith. Presbyterian. Married Mary Frances Richardson. Died in
Baltimore, April 19, 1925. Buried in Presbyterian Cemetery, Snow Hill.
1 Governor• Whyte resigned on March 4, 1874. Governor Groome was elected and
assumed office on the same day. Because of a family business disagreement. Gov-
ernor Whyte changed the spelling of his surname to distInguish his branch of
the family.
' Governor McLane resigned on March 27, 1885. Henry Lloyd, as President of
the Senate, succeeded him as Acting Governor until January 1886, when the Legis-
lature elected him to complete the remainder of Governor McLane' a term which
expired In January 1888.
