128 MARYLAND MANUAL In 1968, the Governor's Committee co-sponsored legislation resulting in a law and regulations establishing standards of facilities for the handicapped in all public buildings in Maryland. The Committee has as a project the constant dissemination of information regarding the regulations and their enforcement. In 1969, the Committee printed and distributed an up-to-date Handbook, Guide for Action, to members. In 1969 and 1970, funds for the work of the Committee were pro- vided by the State Department of Education, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, in the amount of approximately $23,600. Preston Street, Baltimore 21201 Telephone: 383-3010 The Human Relations Commission was originally created by Chapter 548, Acts of 1961 to supersede the Governor's Commission on Prob- lems Affecting the Negro Population. The Commission adopted its present name and expanded its membership by Chapter 83, Acts of 1968. Its purpose is to promote in every way possible the betterment of interracial relations. The Commission is authorized to make such surveys and studies which concern interracial relations, conditions, and problems as it may determine, to eliminate discrimination based on race, religion, sex or national origin. The Commission consists of twelve members appointed by the Gov- ernor with the advice and consent of the Senate for six-year terms. |
