Emphasis is placed upon the presentation of a standard four-year
course in the liberal arts and teacher training, both elementary and
secondary. Both day and evening courses are offered, and at the
present time, students may complete all requirements for the major
in Business Administration, Sociology, and History through study in
the Evening College. A Summer session is conducted as a part of the
regular work of the college, and includes in-service training for
teachers in Maryland schools.
A graduate program leading to the master's degree, primarily for
elementary and secondary school teachers, was inaugurated in the
academic year 1964-65.
During the academic year 1&64-65, Morgan had an enrollment in all
divisions of 4,166, including 2,807 day students, 309 evening students,
and 1,040 summer students.

St. Mary's College of Maryland was originally chartered by Chapter
190, Acts of 1839. It received its present name by Chapter 59, Acts
of 1964. It is governed by a board of twelve trustees appointed by the
Governor for six-year terms. The College offers courses in the liberal
arts with the primary objective of preparing students for transfer to
the junior class of senior colleges. The State has established twenty-
nine 2-year scholarships, one for each county and each legislative
district of Baltimore City. The scholarships are awarded annually on
a basis of need to candidates who have passed examinations conducted
by the State Scholarship Board. There are also four tuition scholar-
ships (two in business and two in education) awarded annually by the
St. Mary's County Board of County Commissioners (Code 1057, 1965
Supp., Art. 77, sees. 260, 282).
