Chapter 41, Acts of 1963 established the Board of Trustees of the
State Colleges to direct and control the four-year public colleges of
the State. The Board consists of nine members, eight of whom are
appointed by the Governor. The State Superintendent of Schools serves
as an ex officio member. The eight appointive members serve for two,
three, four, five, six, seven, eight and nine-year terms, initially. As
their terms expire, they will serve for nine-year terms and may be
reappointed (Code 1957, 1965 Supp., Art. 77, Chap. 13, sees. 164-66).

BOWIE STATE COLLEGE

The Bowie State College is a State-operated school for preparing
elementary and secondary school teachers. It was originally estab-
lished in 1867 as the Baltimore Normal School, a private institution.
By Chapter 599, Acts of 1908 the State purchased it and moved it to
its present location, at which time it became known as the State
Teachers College at Bowie. The college adopted its present name on
July 1, 1963. The college offers a four-year teacher preparation course
leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts.
Certain majors are also offered in the field of liberal arts. Students
taking the full four-year course pay no tuition if they promise to
teach in the public schools of Maryland upon graduation. The enroll-
ment for 1964-65 was 506.
