MARYLAND INSTITUTION FOR MEN

The Maryland Institution for Men, formerly known as the Mary-
land State Reformatory for Males, is a medium security institution
activated by Chapter 619, Acts of 1945, replacing the Maryland State
Penal Farm established by Chapter 366, Acts of 1931, at the same
location. The institution adopted its present name on July 1, 1962.
The Courts commit male offenders from 16 through 25 years of age
to this institution to serve indeterminate sentences which have maxi-
mum limits. Although this institution is primarily for youthful
offenders, it receives prisoners from the Maryland Penitentiary and
Maryland House of Correction, regardless of age, when their transfer
is authorized by the Commissioner of Correction; and the Commis-
sioner may direct the transfer of inmates from this institution to
either the Penitentiary or House of Correction when their behavior or
other circumstances indicate this action would be advisable.

Situated on 1,119 acres of farm land, the Maryland Institution for
Men conducts farming and dairying operations, with both of these
projects providing supplies for this and other State institutions. The
State Use Industries activities include a cannery; brush and carton
shop; bookbindery; stonecrushing plant; metalworking department;
feed mixing mill; and a poultry and turkey raising project.
The average population for fiscal year 1963 was 1226.

The Maryland Institution for Women was established by Chapter
71, Acts of 1941 as the Women's Prison of the State of Maryland;
and by Chapter 520, Acts of 1945, received the name of Maryland
State Reformatory for Women. It adopted its present name on July I,
