By Chapter 98, Acts of 1956, the General Assembly authorized the
construction of the Maryland Children's Center for the Department
of Public Welfare. Children adjudged delinquent by the courts may
be sent to the Center for not more than thirty days. The Center is to
study each child and make recommendations to the courts regarding
an appropriate treatment program. The Center has a capacity for 56
children (Code 1957, 1962 Supp., Art. 88A, sec. 39A).

Thomas J. S. Waxter Children's Center

Opened in September 1963, the Thomas J. S. Waxter Children's
Center has the same Superintendent and the same Advisory Board as
the Maryland Children's Center. The Waxter Center has the same
powers and responsibilities as the Maryland Children's Center. Initi-
ally known as the Southern Maryland Children's Center, it was author-
ized by Chapter 38, Acts of 1962. It received its present name by
Chapter 131, Acts of 1963 (Code 1957, 1963 Supp., Art. 88A, sec. 39B).
