St. Mary's Seminary Junior College was chartered by Chapter 190,
Acts of 1839. It received its present name by Chapter 676, Acts of
1949. It is governed by a board of twelve trustees appointed by the
Governor for six-year terms. The College offers courses in the liberal
arts with the primary objective of preparing students for transfer to
the junior class of senior colleges and universities. The State has
established twenty-nine 2-year scholarships, one for each county and
each legislative district of Baltimore City. The scholarships are
awarded annually on a basis of need to candidates who have passed
examinations conducted by the County Board of Education or the
Board of School Commissioners of Baltimore City (Code 1957, Art. 77,
secs. 260, 282). The 1962-63 enrollment was 426.

The Anatomy Board of Maryland, an ex officio body, created by
Chapter 609, Acts of 1947, is composed of the head of the Anatomy
Department and one additional instructor of anatomy from the Uni-
versity of Maryland School of Medicine and from. The Johns Hopkins
University School of Medicine. The members of the Board are desig-
nated by the administrative officers of each school. The purpose of the
agency is to insure the proper distribution of bodies to qualified
medical schools and agencies. Such bodies are used only for the pro-
motion and application of the medical sciences. If, however, the body
is claimed for burial by relatives, it is surrendered for interment.
Bodies are distributed chiefly to The Johns Hopkins University School
of Medicine and the University of Maryland Schools of Medicine and
Dentistry according to an arranged plan (Code 1957, Art. 43, secs.
149,156-161).
