Route #3, Hagerstown (Washington County)
Telephone: Regent 3-2800 (Hagerstown)

The Maryland State Reformatory for Males is a medium security
institution which was activated by Chapter 619, Acts of 1945, replacing
the Maryland State Penal Farm established by Chapter 366, Acts of
1931 at the same location. The Courts commit males from 16 through
25 years of age to the Reformatory to serve indeterminate sentences
which have maximum limits. Although this institution is primarily
for youthful offenders, it receives prisoners from the Penitentiary and
the House of Correction, regardless of age, when their transfer is
authorized by the Superintendent of Prisons of the Department of
Correction; and the Superintendent of Prisons may direct the transfer
of Reformatory inmates to other institutions when their behavior or
other circumstances indicate this action would be advisable.

Situated on 1119 acres of farm land, the Reformatory for Males
conducts farming and dairying operations, with both of these projects
providing supplies for the Reformatory and other State institutions.
The State Use Industries activities include a Cannery, Brush and Box
Shop, Book Repair Shop, Stonecrushing Plant, Metal Shop, Feed Mix-
ing Mill, Sewing Shop, a poultry and turkey raising project, and the
manufacture of temporary license tags for automobiles.
