This school was established as the Female House of Refuge in
1886 and purchased by the State in 1918. When the school was
moved from Baltimore to its present site in 1922, it adopted its pres-
ent name. The school provides for the care and training of delin-
quent white girls. During the fiscal year 1956 it provided care for
77 girls who were committed to the school and 109 girls who were
detained there.

GREEN RIDGE FORESTRY CAMP FOR BOYS

Green Ridge Forestry Camp for Boys was established in May
1955 as a specialized institution to be operated by the State Depart-
ment of Public Welfare in cooperation with the State Department
of Forests and Parks. It serves 16, 17, and 18 year old boys who
have been committed to either the Maryland Training School For
Boys or Boys' Village; who are in good physical health; and who
are interested in active outdoor living. Green Ridge was created in
the belief that boys could be guided back to good citizenship while
performing valuable work in the conservation of natural resources.
During the first two years of its operation, the camp has served
a total of 243 boys. The average daily population during fiscal
year 1957 was 28 boys.

The apparent success of the first Boys' Forestry Camp at Green
Ridge prompted the 1956 General Assembly to appropriate capital
funds for two additional camps and operating funds for Camp II.
The first of these two camps is located in Garrett County just four
miles from Lonaconing. It will open in the current (1958) fiscal year
and will serve 25 boys.

The third Boys' Forestry Camp will be at New Germany in Gar-
rett County. It will open in the current (1958) fiscal year; will
