SALISBURY STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE

The State Teachers College at Salisbury was established in 1925
as a normal school offering a two-year preparation for elementary
school teachers. In 1931, the course was lengthened to three years,
and in 1934 it was extended to four years, leading to the degree of
Bachelor of Science. In addition the College offers a two-year junior
college program. Those pursuing the full four-year program pay
no tuition if they promise to teach in the public schools of Maryland
for two years following their graduation. The College enrollment
for 1955-56 was 346.

TOWSON STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE

The State Teachers College at Towson was established as the first
State normal school by the General Assembly of 1865. The school
was originally located in Baltimore and was moved to Towson in
1915. In 1935, it became a four-year teachers college that grants a
degree of Bachelor of Science. Graduates are prepared for teaching
in kindergarten, elementary, or junior high school. The college also
offers a two-year junior college course. Students enrolling in the
four-year curriculum for prospective teachers pay no tuition if they
promise to teach in the public schools of Maryland following their
graduation. The enrollment of the college for the school year 1956-
57 was 1,279.
