The State Teachers College at Towson was established as the
Maryland State Normal School by the General Assembly of 1865.
The school was originally located in Baltimore and was moved to
Towson in 1915. In 1932 the normal school became a four-year
teachers' college. The curriculum includes courses in both junior
high school and elementary teaching leading to the degree of Bachelor
of Science in Education. The school also offers a two-year junior
college course. Students enrolling in the four-year curriculum for
prospective teachers pay no tuition if they promise to teach in the
public schools of Maryland following their graduation. The enroll-
ment of the College for the school year 1952-53 was 857.
