LEGAL HOLIDAYS

1. Fixed

3. Saturdays

It is lawful for banks in Maryland to close their doors at twelve
o'clock noon on every Saturday of the year. After twelve o'clock noon,
Saturday is a legal holiday. This does not apply in the following
counties: Baltimore, Caroline, Howard, and Talbot. (1947 Supple-
ment to the Annotated Code of Public General Laws, Art. 13, Sec. 11).

Special Observances

Resolutions of the General Assembly have authorized the Governor
to proclaim special "Days" as follows:

Republic of Lithuania Day (Res. No. 8, 1935)..............................February 16

Arbor Day (Res. No. 7, 1894)...............................................................One day in April

General Pulaski Memorial Day (Res. No. 5, 1931)........................October 11

Republic of Czechoslovakia Day (Res. No. 3, 1935)........................October 28

Frederick County Only

Repudiation Day: After twelve o'clock noon, November 23 is a
legal bank half-holiday (Ch. 510, Acts 1894).

NAMES AND ORIGINS OF COUNTIES

ALLEGANY

The name is from the Indian word Oolikhanna meaning "Beautiful
Stream." It was erected by an Act of Assembly, Chapter 29, Acts of
1789. The County seat is Cumberland.
