Commission maintains a current inventory of study and research con-
ducted by State agencies, in behalf or in the interests of the State
(Code 1947 Supp. Art. 88C)..
To carry out these functions the Commission is at present (1) study-
ing the medical needs and facilities of the State especially in regard
to dental care and tuberculosis; (2) surveying the agencies of the
State having jurisdiction over the water resources of Maryland; (3)
making an inventory of the research programs being carried on by
the various State agencies; (4) continuing its collection and study of
the social and economic trends within the State; (5) surveying the
Capital Improvement Programs and needs of the various State agen-
cies and institutions; and (6) studying zoning problems and plans of
the State highways..
The Commission is also surveying the Baltimore Metropolitan Area
for the purpose of coordinating the public services of the area. It is
also making a survey of the Anne Arundel Capital Improvement pro-
gram. At the request of the General Assembly of 1947, the Commis-
sion is conducting a survey of the farm produce marketing facilities
of the City of Baltimore. The Commission will make a report of its
findings to the Governor and Legislative Council and to the Mayor and
Council of Baltimore City on or before October 1, 1948 (Acts of 1947,

The Department of Public Improvements was created by the General
Assembly in 1947. The director of the Department is the Chief Engi-
neer, who is appointed by the Governor for a term of four years
