of Maryland by the General Assembly at its session of 1935
and assumed the duties of that office January 29, 1935, and
was reelected Treasurer by the General Assembly at its
1939 session. By virtue of his office as Treasurer of Mary-
land, he is a inember of the Board of Trustees and Treas-
urer of the State Teachers' Retirement System and a
member of the Boards of the several State-owned insti-
tutions. He was elected Chairman of the Board of
Trustees of the State Teachers' Retirement System.

Since May, 1932, he was President of County Trust
Company of Maryland (formerly The Eastern Shore Trust
Company), which company operates banks in ten counties
of Maryland, with its main bank in Cambridge and its
executive offices in Baltimore City, until March, 1937, when
he resigned, upon his election as Executive Vice-President
and a director of the Baltimore National Bank.

Mr. Miles was married in 1919 to Miss A. Frances Will-
iams, daughter of the late L. Ernest and Georgia Todd Will-
iams (of Salisbury. Mr. and Mrs. Miles reside in Balti-
more and have three children.

CLERK OF THE COURT OF APPEALS

Clerk of the Court of Appeals: JAMBS A. YOUNG (Demo-
crat), Cumberland, Maryland.

James A. Young was born at Keyser, West Virginia, May
4, 1879. Two years later his parents moved into Allegany
County. He attended the public schools in Barton, Moscow
Mills and Cumberland. He learned the job of printing trade
in the plant of the Evening Times in Cumberland, and for
a while was foreman, and then engaged in the job printing
business in Cumberland.

On June 26, 1900, Mr. Young married Miss Daisy Wilson
White, a native of Cumberland. He is a member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church, and is actively identified with
several fraternal societies.

Mr. Young comes from a prominent family, his father,
John W. Young, having been twice elected Clerk of Court
for Allegany County as a Democrat, although the county is
strongly Republican. He has held responsible political posi-
tions, having been clerk of the Board of Election Super-
visors, and in 1921 was elected a Road Director for Alle-
gany County.

In the election of 1923, Mr. Young was elected Clerk of
the Court of Appeals, and has been reelected at each suc-
