The Department of Law of Maryland was established by Chapter
560 of the Acts of 1916; which has since been amended by Chapter 22
of the Acts of 1918, Chapter 289 of the Acts of 1931, Chapter 874 of
the Acts of 1937, and Chapter 577 of the Acts of 1939. These Acts
provide that the head of this Department shall be the Attorney
General of the State, who is authorized to appoint six Assistants,
one of whom he shall designate as Deputy Attorney-General, two of
whom shall be known as Assistant Attorneys-General, one of whom
shall be known as Special Assistant Attorney General for the Comp-
troller of the Treasury, one of whom shall be known as Special Assist-
ant Attorney General for the State Roads Commission, and the other
of whom shall be known as Special Attorney for the State Accident
Fund. He also appoints the Special Assistant Attorney General for
the Unemployment Compensation Board..
The Attorney General and his Assistants, in addition to the per-
formance of the duties now or hereafter prescribed by the Constitution
and Laws of this State, are required to act as counsel to all of the
officials of Baltimore City appointed by the Governor and all Boards,
Commissions, Departments, Offices or Institutions of the State Govern-
ment, except the Public Service Commission, the County Boards of
Supervisors of Elections, Boards of School Commissioners and other
county boards or officers of the respective counties of the State.
