The Department of Law of Maryland was established by Chapter
660 of the Acts of 1916, which has since been amended by Chapter 22
of the Acts of 1918. These Acts provide that the head of this Depart-
ment shall be the Attorney-General of the State, who is authorized to
appoint four Assistant Attorneys-General at a salary of $2,500 each.
The Attorney-General and his Assistants, in addition to the per-
formance of the duties now or hereafter prescribed by the Constitu-
tion and Laws of this State, are required to act as counsel to all of
the officials of Baltimore City appointed by the Governor and all
Boards, Commissions, Departments, Offices or Institutions of the State
government except the Public Service Commission, the County Boards
of Supervisors of Elections, Boards of School Commissioners and Other
county boards or officers of the respective counties of the State.
