than forty dollars, and one dollar for every succeeding day such
obstructions shall remain, the one-half to the informer and the
other half to the commissioners of Pocomoke River, to be ex-
pended by them in cleaning out said river.

NEGKOES AND SLAVES.

67. It shall be the duty of constables in Worcester county to
arrest and bring before a justice of the peace any slave who may
be going at large and hiring himself within their respective dis-
tricts, or who may not have a fixed home in the family or on the
estate of his owner, or be hired to or in the regular employ of
another person by virtue of a contract with his owner; in all
cases, the justice, if satisfied that the said slave was going at
large in violation of the laws of this State, shall direct the con-
stable to hire such slave for the entire residue of the year.

68. For each examination of slaves under the preceding sec-
tion, the justice shall be entitled to twenty-five cents, to be levied
as part of the county expenses.

69. Each constable shall keep an account of the slaves by him
hired out, and the amount of hire received for each, the account
to be submitted and the money accounted for to the county com-
missioners, annually.

70. The county commissioners shall allow any constable who
may have taken up and hired any slaves two dollars for each
slave, but in no case shall the amount allowed any constable
exceed two-thirds of the amount by him paid over to the com-
missioners.

71. Any constable who neglects to comply with the provisions
of the 67th section of this article shall be subject to a fine of not
more than ten nor less than three dollars, to be recovered by in-
dictment in the Circuit Court for said county.

72. No slave being a pilot, and hiring himself as such, shall be
subject to the provisions of section 65 of this article, nor shall
other slaves be arrested therefor during twenty days in harvest.

78. The clerk of the Circuit Court for said county shall not
grant a license to any free negro to sell merchandise in said
county, except by the special order of the said court passed on
