shall be qualified as the said voters, for the term of one, two,
three, four and five years : and the first board shall determine by
lot the term of service of each commissioner, and on the first
Saturday in July in each year thereafter, between the hours
aforesaid, shall elect one commissioner for five years, to take the
place of the commissioner whose term of office shall have ex-
pired.
135. All elections shall be held and conducted as shall from
time to time be directed by the Oi'dinanoeni of said corporation,
•not contrary to law.
1S<5. If any of the said commissioners shall die, resign, remove
from said town, or be otherwise disqualified during the year-for
which they were elected, an election to fill the vacancy shall be
held after ten days' notice.
137*. The limits of said town shall extend to the distance of
one-third of a mile from the sign-post of the tavern house known
as " James Lecompte's" or the " frame tavern" each way; and the
property within said limits, except such parts of adjacent farms
as are embraced in the limits aforesaid, shall be subject to such
taxes and charges as may be deemed necessary by the said com-
missioners, or a majority of them, to support and maintain the
expenses which may at any time be incurred in the improvement
of said town.
138. The commissioners so elected shall choose a president from
their own number, who shall preside at all meetings of the com-
missioners, and shall preserve order and enforce their ordinances.
139. The commissioners, or a majority of them, may meet as
often as occasion may require, not less than once in every three
months.
140. They may appoint a clerk and prescribe his duties, and
may allow him such compensation as they may think proper,
and all ordinances passed by them shaU be entered by their
clerk in a book to be kept for the purpose, and shall be open to
the inspection of all persons interested, and copies of all ordi-
nances shall be put up in the most public places in said town.
141*. They may pass all such ordinances and by-laws, not
contrary to law, as they may think proper, for the comfort,
