146. The county commissioners shall allow any constable
who may have taken up and hired any slaves two dollars for
each slave, but in no case shall the amount allowed any con-
stable exceed two-thirds of the amount paid over to the com-
missioners.
147. Any constable who neglects or refuses to comply with
the provisions of this law, shall be subject to a fine of not more
than ten nor less than three dollars, to be recovered by indict-
ment in the Circuit Court.'
148. No slave being a pilot, and hiring himself as such, shall
be subject to the provisions of this law, nor shall other slaves be
arrested thereunder during twenty days in harvest.
ORPHANS' COURT.
149. The judges of the Orphans' Court of Caroline county shall
each receive two dollars a day for each day's attendance, and
five cents a mile for every mile that his place of residence is dis-
tant from Denton, but such mileage shall not be computed for
returning home.
150. They may appoint the crier of said court, who shall be
entitled to one dollar and fifty cents a day for every day the
Begister of Wills shall certify he acted as such.
OUT-PENSIONS.
151. The county commissioners may annually levy a sum of
money not exceeding four hundred dollars, to be by them appor-
tioned among such poor persons applying therefor as the said
court shall deem fit objects for out pensions.
ROADS.
152. The county commissioners of Caroline county shall an-
nually levy upon the assessable property of the county such sum
of money as • they may ascertain from the supervisors of roads
in the county to be probably necessary for the repair of roads
therein.
153. Each supervisor shall call on the taxable persons of his
district who are actually chargeable with taxes, and hone other,
