370 CAROLINE COUNTY. [ART. 6.

12. The county commissioners shall annually levy on the
assessable property of the county, at the time of making the
county levy, such sum as the said trustees, or a majority of them,
shall deem necessary for the support of the alms-house and work
house, together with six per cent. for collecting the same; and
the money when collected shall be paid to the trustees or to their
order, or the order of a majority of them, under their common
seal, to be by them applied to the maintenance of the inmates of
said alms-house and work house, to paying a doctor for his salary
and medicines, in providing men and women servants, to be
under the direction of the overseer, and the purchase of
materials, for the use and employment of the inmates who may
be able to work.

13. The trustees shall meet at the alms-house annually in the
month of July, and shall then and there appoint a suitable person
to be overseer of the alms-house, and such other proper officers
and servants as they shall deem necessary; they shall also meet
on the third Monday in July and fourth Monday in October, and
on the second Monday in January, and at such other times as
th^y shall think necessary, in each year.

14. They" shall, out of the money levied for their use, pay the
overseer a sum not exceeding two hundred dollars per annum,
and so pro rata during his continuance in office, and furnish him
with sufficient food, fire wood and house room for himself and
family-his said family at no time to exceed four persons in
number to be fed at the public expense.

15. They shall take bond from the said overseer with good
and sufficient securities in the penalty of one thousand dollars,
payable to the said trustees and their successors for the use of
the poor, conditioned for the faithful performance of the duties
of his office.

16. They, or a majority of them, may remove such overseer
and all other officers by them appointed and choose others in
their place.

17. The overseer shall keep a list of all poor beggars, vagrants,
vagabonds and other offenders placed in or committed to the
alms-house or work house.
