entitled to receive the same, the corporation may proceed to re-
grade and pave thai said street, lane or alley.

855. They may pass such ordinances for the purpose of alter-
ing or changing the grade of any street, lane or alley as they
may deem advisable; but no such alterations shall be made
unless the proprietors of the greater number of feet of ground
binding or fronting on that part of the street, lane or alley, the
grade of which is to be altered, shall first make application
in writing to the mayor and city council for such change or
alteration.

856. They may, on the application or assent in writing of the
owners of the major part in extent of front feet of the lots
fronting on each side of any street, or part of a street, pass such
ordinances as shall be necessary for the construction of any track
or tracks of railway on and along any such street; and may
permit and cause such alteration in the grade of such street as
may be necessary for the more convenient and useful construc-
tion of such railway, and may levy and assess on all the lots
fronting on the street, or part of a street, or on the owners of
anch lots, their just proportion of expense of such construction,
and enforce the payment thereof; and the proprietor of ar.y lot
in front of which any railway shall be so constructed, and the
just proportion of constructing which shall be paid by him, shall
be entitled at his own expense to have a convenient sideling or
turnout made. to enable him to have the beneficial use of said
railway.

857. The president, directors and companies of the different
turnpike companies owning roads running into the city of Balti-
more, may cede to said city such parts of said roads as lie within
the corporate limits of said city, and the same when ceded shall
be in all respects subject to the same regulations as nnpaved
public streets.

868. The mayor and city council may, on application to them
in writing of a majority in front feet of the owners of land in
Baltimore county and in the city of Baltimore fronting on North
Avenue, Or in any part thereof, have the same, or such part
thereof as such majority may apply for, graded and paved, if in
their opinion consistent with the public good; and provide for
astertaining whether any and what amount of benefit or damage
will be caused thereby to the owners of the land on each side of
