returns thereof to the commanding officers of their respective
brigades, to be by them recorded.
657. Each regiment of infantry shall not exceed ten companies.
658. It shall be the duty of the commanding officers of every
company district, attended by one or more of his officers, non-
commissioned officers or privates, whom he may select, to enroll,
between, the tenth day of March an4 first day of April in each
year, every able bodied white male citizen between twenty-one
and forty-five years of age liable to do militia duty within his
district; and in all cases of doubt respecting the age of any
person enrolled, or intended to be enrolled, the person whose age
is questioned shall prove the same to the satisfaction of the com-
manding officer aforesaid; and if any keeper of a tavern, board-
ing house, or master or mistress of any dwelling house, shall
refuse to give information of the name or names of any person
or persons residing with him or her liable to militia duty, when
applied to for that purpose by the said commanding officer, or
shall give any false information upon such application, he or she
shall forfeit the sum of ten dollars for each offence, which shall
be recovered under the direction of said commanding officer.
659. If any person liable to militia duty upon the application
to him personally by said commanding officer shall either refuse
to give his name or not give his name truly, he shall forfeit ten
dollars, to be recovered under the direction of said officer.
660. If any officer, non-coonnissioned officer or private, shall
neglect or refuse to perform the duty of enrolling required of him
in this article, he shall be cashiered or fined a sum not exceeding
one hundred dollars, in the discretion of such court martial as the
case may require-
661. If any enrolling officer shall omit to enroll any person or
persona liable to militia duty within his district within the time
aforesaid, he or his successor in office shall enroll such person or
persons, as well as those who may from time to time arrive at the
age of twenty-one years, whenever the same shall come to his
knowledge, and in- making said enrolment he shall be attended
by one or more of his officers, non-commissioned officers or
privates, whom he may select, if he deem it necessary; and the
said enrolment shall be entered on the company book of said
officer, and a return thereof made forthwith to the commanding
