having jurisdiction thereof, one-half to the informer and the other
half to the clerk of said court for the use of the State.

473. If any butcher or other person shall purchase any beef
cattle or hogs, brought for sale within the corporate limits of
said city, or within five miles thereof, which have not been
weighed by said weighmaster, he shall be subject to the pen-
alties and forfeitures imposed by the last preceding section.

LUMBEB.

474. Any free white citizen of the State of Maryland, on ap-
plication to the clerk of the Court of Common Pleas in Balti-
more city, and on paying said clerk the sum of one hundred and
fifty dollars, shall be entitled to receive a license to act as in-
spector of lumber for one year from the date thereof.

475. The person applying for such license shall, at the time of
receiving the same, take and subscribe before said clerk an oath
that he will honestly and faithfully discharge the duties of said
office.

476. No person engaged in manufacturing, vending or trading
in lumber, individually or as a partner, or as agent, clerk or
employee of a manufacturer or trader in or vendor of lumber,
shall be entitled to a license to act as inspector of lumber.

477. All lumber coming to the city of Baltimore shall be
inspected by a licensed inspector of said city; Provided, the
same has not already been inspected by a regularly appointed
inspector for Port Deposit, Havre de Grace, Perryville, or its
vicinity.

478. Lumber shall be inspected and sold in Baltimore by
measurement only, and all lumber shall be measured by the
rule of board measure, except boards of an inch and under,
which shall be measured on the surface.

479. The contents of each board, plank or scantling, or bundle
of cypress or juniper shingles, shall be marked thereon, and if
any person shall alter any mark made by an inspector with any
intent to defraud or deceive any person or persons, he shall for
every offence forfeit and pay the sum of one hundred dollars, to
be recovered by indictment in the Criminal Court of Baltimore,
