proof made, that any person in said alms-house hath behaved in
a disorderly manner, or hath neglected to obey and keep any of
the ordinances, rules and by-laws of the said corporation, the
said justice, or the said trustees, may order and direct such.
moderate and proper correction, not exceeding thirty-nine lashes
for any one offence, to be given to such offender, as the nature
of the case may require.

59. The said trustees shall be entitled to receive the sum of
two dollars per day for each day they shall meet together in the
discharge of their duties.

60. If any person shall sell or dispose of any strong liquor or
other thing to any inmate of said alms-house, he shall forfeit and
pay the sum of twenty-five dollars.

61. Every person who shall be received into the alms-house,
shall, upon the shoulder of the right sleeve of the uppermost
garment, in an open and visible manner, wear the letters, "P.
B." in large Eoman character, cut in red or blue cloth, as the
overseer shall direct; and if any such person shall neglect or
refuse to wear such badge, any one of said trustees may punish
such offender either by ordering his relief or usual allowance
to be abridged, suspended or withdrawn, or by ordering such
offender to be whipped not exceeding twenty lashes, and kept
at hard labor any number of days not exceeding twenty-one;

and if any overseer shall receive into the alms-house any person
not having or wearing such badge, he shall forfeit and pay the
sum of fifteen dollars. _

82. All penalties and forfeitures imposed by this law shall be
recovered in the Criminal Court of Baltimore, by action or by
indictment.

63. All sheriffs, bailiffs, constables, and other officers, shall aid
and assist the said trustees and the officers by them appointed in
the discharge of their respective duties.

64. If any person shall at any time be sued or prosecuted for
any thing done in pursuance of this law, or any thing therein
contained, he may plead the general issue and give the special
matter in evidence; and if upon trial verdict shall be found for
the defendant, or if the plaintiff shall be non-suit or discontinue,
the defendant shall recover treble costs, and if the plaintiff shall
