488 PENITENTIARY. [ART. 73.

charge of their respective duties, shall execute bonds to the State
with security to be approved by the Board of Directors, and in
no manner connected with the management of said Penitentiary,
the warden in the sum of ten thousand dollars, and the other
officers, guards and superintendents in such penalty and with
such security as the board of directors may deem proper, condi-
tioned for the faithful performance of the duties required of them
respectively by the laws of this State, and the rules and regula-
tions that may be adopted from time to time for the government
of the said Penitentiary, and the said bonds shall be filed in the
Executive Department of the State, and a certified copy thereof,
under the seal of the State, shall be evidence in actions on said
bonds or any of them; and if either of the officers aforesaid
shall neglect to execute bond as herein prescribed, or neglect to
take the oath prescribed by the directors, within twenty days
after notice of his or her appointment, another person shall be
appointed in place of the said delinquent.

8. The directors shall fix the amount of the salaries to be paid
to the deputy warden, police and other officers, guards, and
superintendents employed in the penitentiary, shall define their
respective duties, and take from them respectively the bond
required by the preceding section.

9. The warden shall receive a salary of fifteen hundred dollars,
and shall be allowed the occupancy of such parts of the front
building as a dwelling as are not used for the purposes of the
penitentiary, and all necessary out houses, yards and grounds
not within the walls of the prison proper.

10. The directors shall receive two dollars each, for every day
they may necessarily attend in the discharge of their duties as
directors, or in the capacity of monthly committee, as herein-
after provided; but when they attend in both capacities on the
same day, they shall not receive more than one day's pay.

11. The book-keeper shall keep a record of the attendance of
said directors, as directors, and as members of the monthly com-
mittee, and they shall be paid for their services according to the
entries in said record.

12. The name and corporate style of the institution shall be
The Directors of the Maryland Penitentiary," and by that name
the said Directors shall have power to institute any suit or suits
